The New Brazen Careerist Launches Today

Young entrepreneurship blogging networks are an interesting concept to me.  Over the past several years of blogging I’ve developed a lot of great relationships with other young, passionate business owners.  When I sit back and think about it, I’ve met the majority of them through one of the blogging networks I’ve participated in, primarily either the (now semi-defunct) Mind Petals, or the Brazen Careerist.  They syndicate my posts and pass me new readers,  I provide them with relevant content, and they give me new exposure to young professionals I’ve never met. I’ve met several of these people in person and … Continue reading

Computing in 2019

On my way to work I’ve been listening to a bunch of the Stanford Entrepreneurial Thought Leader Podcasts. They are all fascinating. I feel like it’s such a better use of my time than just listening to music. I actually look forward to my drives because these talks just turn my creative side loose. The Vinod Khosla lecture was particularly fascinating. Khosla is best known for starting Sun Microsystems, but he currently is making waves in cleantech and other environmentally friendly technologies with his VC company Khosla ventures. In the talk, Khosla mentions how 10 years ago he predicted that … Continue reading

Z.ips.ME Launched!

After URL shortening service tr.im closed and then re-opened this week due to the public backlash, I thought it would be a good time to release Z.ips.ME, the URL shortener for PHP & MySQL that I started working on a few months back. We’ve been using it internally for our Twitter accounts and it’s worked fantastic. Of course, a few other developers had the exact same thought, so I doubt that this thing will really take off. As was discussed in that first post, the easily replicable nature of the project makes it the type of thing that probably isn’t … Continue reading

Announcing Z.ips.ME – Your Very Own URL Shortener

Background When I started using Twitter, one of the first things that piqued my interest was URL shorteners. Not only does it make no sense why Twitter doesn’t officially have their own URL shortening service (although bit.ly is sort of official now), but it really made no sense to me why everyone used either bit.ly or tinyurl.com instead of creating their own. A URL shortener is uber simple to program and can offer you a ton of value.  So I picked up the domain “ips.me” with the intent of using it as my own URL shortener. Then I realized that … Continue reading

Why Don’t All News Sites Have This?

The other day I noticed that SportsIllustrated.com has an awesome feature on all of their stories: a bulleted list of “story highlights” in the upper-right hand corner of the page. SI.com is owned by CNN, so CNN also has the same “story highlights”.  I’m actually surprised that more news sites don’t have this feature.  I normally scan 95% of the articles I click on just to pick up the key points that they have so neatly summarized for me up on top.  For most stories, that’s all I want.  Brilliant!

Will Twitter Replace…

No.  The answer is no.  Twitter won’t replace blogging or anything else.  It is it’s own medium, one which I recently found was very helpful and decided was worth my time.  But the idea that it will replace blogs is a little crazy in my opinion.  Just like it’s crazy to think that blogs replace a well-researched newspaper or magazine article, or that the same article could ever replace a book.  A tweet takes 60 seconds to write well, a blog post takes 30 minutes, an article takes a few weeks, and a book takes years. Twitter is the ultimate … Continue reading

Tweet This

I just broke down and signed up for Twitter, but not for the reasons most people do.  I found the Twitter search EXTREMELY helpful today when my Thunderbird + Google Apps Gmail IMAP  email set up started giving me all sorts of errors.  No one had likely blogged about it yet (plus there’s no real good way to instantly search blogs), but in searching Twitter I found out that all sorts of people were having the same issues as me.  It was very re-assuring and time saving.  I didn’t see any posts on the Gmail Google Groups so I may … Continue reading

What Does the Future Hold for E-Commerce?

A friend recently asked me this question in an email to help him with a project for school.  I thought my reply was worthy of a blog post and will hopefully warrant some discussion in the comments This is a really interesting question. I may be a bit biased considering that I own an e-commerce company, but I see a huge amount of growth ahead for e-commerce businesses.  In particular, I see the growth potential in e-commerce as very high relative to the growth in other online and offline businesses. In fact, I think we’re already starting to see evidence … Continue reading

Times Are Changing

Back when I was in high school, we barely used computers.  Other than typing up reports and a little bit for research, I don’t think I really needed a computer in any of my non-elective classes.  I graduated in 2000.  A lot has changed since then. Our sports writer for the Tastefully Driven Lifestyle Blog runs a great blog called The Blog of Champions.  He also happens to be in high school.  As part of a social studies project he and his classmates were asked to create a blog about social injustice in America.  Let me repeat that:  as part … Continue reading

Google Chrome Initial Thoughts – WOW

When I woke up today and combed through my morning email I was shocked to see that yesterday Google announced that they would be releasing a browser today.  Usually these things leak out sooner, but I hadn’t heard anything other than the same type of vague rumors that you hear about a gPhone or gOS. Google Chrome, as it’s called, was released today at noon and can be downloaded for XP/Vista (Linux and Mac soon to follow).  After reading the comic and watching the video, I was excited to download it and take it for a spin. While all of the features sounded … Continue reading
