I like smoothies. I hate blenders. They are such a total pain to clean, to the point where I avoid making anything that involves a blender because I hate cleaning the damn thing. My Sports Illustrated. They’ve sent it every week since I canceled a few months ago. At the time I wrote: After I picked it up and started flipping through, I began to wonder: would they be better off if they just kept sending me the magazine anyway? It’s no secret that the subscription fees barely cover the cost of printing. The real money is in the ads, and for ads you need eyeballs. Declining subscribers = declining ad revenue. Last month I decided not to renew my subscription to Sports Illustrated. I love the photography. I love the feature stories. There is probably one “great” story every other week, and at least one “absolutely amazing holy crap I have to tell everyone about this” story ever year. BUT since it’s a weekly publication it costs ~$100/year, a very steep price for a magazine. Especially one that you can read online for free. In the April issue of Inc. Magazine they did a great feature story about virtual companies, actually going as far as turning Inc. “virtual” for the production of the April issue.  The entire article is a great read and touches upon many of the aspects of running a remote company, but I found the reactions of some of the Inc. staff who were working from home to be particularly interesting. I am very grateful to be in the position that I am in with our company.   Our business hasn’t been impacted hardly at all by this recession – we’ve still been growing very fast, which probably would have been happening irrespective of the economy at large, much like I predicted.
