If I Couldn’t Run a Business…

Let’s just say hypothetically that for some reason I was not legally allowed to run a business for an indefinite amount of time starting tomorrow.  What would I do?  If you run a business, what would you do? I’m not sure why, but I think about this question quite often.  I don’t really foresee myself ever not running a business, but I always wonder what I’d be doing if I wasn’t. If I wanted to return to the corporate world, I’d dust off my resume and start applying for either engineering or web development/SEO jobs.  I’d research and contact only … Continue reading

Prioritizing Work – Part Deux

Oke from Life is What You Make of It (one of my favorite blog designs, by the way) left a really interesting comment on my last post about prioritizing work: I got a question for you. I am having a problem with this myself and do a shitty job on getting back on track. How do you prioritize your work/hobby/activities on the side when none of the tasks deal with making money? I’ve been thinking about that for a while, and decided it warranted it’s own post.  In many cases, prioritizing the work isn’t the hardest part.  It’s figuring out … Continue reading

It’s a Lifestyle Thing

George and I often remark to each other that we wouldn’t trade our lifestyle for any amount of money.  It happens pretty often because we’re often reminded of how lucky we are to do what we do everyday. I think that’s often lost in the decision of whether or not to become an entrepreneur, particularly for young entrepreneurs.  Yes – you should want to change the world.  Yes – you should want to make a ton of money.  But starting a business should also be about creating a great lifestyle for yourself.  Luckily, since businesses are a reflection of their … Continue reading

Building Something

I was having a discussion with a friend the other day about his job hunt.  It’s not that he doesn’t like his current job per-se, but that he feels like it isn’t offering any growth opportunities – financially or otherwise.  We discussed how frustrating it is to go to a job every day and feel like you aren’t accomplishing anything important. I know the feeling.  I felt it at my job, and by all normal measures I had a very good job.  Unfortunately, my advice in situations like these isn’t always the best.  I can’t just say “do what I … Continue reading

Growth and Time Management

If last year I started a project like this SportsLizard revamp that I’m working on now, it would have gone a lot differently.  For one, it would have been programmed a lot worse and probably taken twice as many hours of work to get the same result.  In my head I think that and say “cool, what was a four week project a year ago is a two week project now” and then I expect myself to fly through it and get it done in two weeks. Then I realize that I go to the warehouse three days a week … Continue reading

Partnership Family Values

It seems to be a pretty popular assumption that running a business will tear your family apart.  The two compete for time with each other, your family always getting jealous of your commitment to your company, and you becoming bitter that your family doesn’t understand and support you.  We’ve all heard the argument before.  In many cases, with many business owners, this is very true. But let me present a different possible perspective to you.  Contemplate the example of my partners and I for a second: We spend a lot of time together almost every single day We live off … Continue reading

What I Do on the Weekend

No question the most interesting statement from the interview I posted earlier today with Jun Loayza was when he said: “As a young entrepreneur, you will have NO work/life balance. I am very serious about this. If you want to succeed, you need to be working 24/7 every day of the week.” That’s why I wrote such a long response prior to asking my next question: “It’s easy to be happy for a year or two working all day, every day.  In my opinion, it’s hard to be happy doing that for a lifetime – one day you’ll wake up … Continue reading

Early Riser 7 Month Update

It’s now been seven full months since I decided to finally gain control of my sleep schedule and rise every day at 6 AM.  Clearly a lot has changed with our business and with my life, but I’ve managed to stick to the schedule and at this point I can say without a doubt that I have formed a habit that I can continue for the rest of my life should I chose to do so. Right now it’s 8:30 AM.  I’ve already gone to they gym, eaten twice (before and after), showered, shaved my head (weekly Friday ritual), dressed, and … Continue reading

Productive Output Update

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my productive output post where I declared that I would never work more than 35 hours in a week again (see Productive Output:  What the 9-5 Misses and Why I’m Done with a 40 Hour Workweek). It was only two months ago, but a lot has changed since then. At the time I had just come off of 2+ years of pushing my entire life aside.  In college I worked hard, but I played hard too.  I might not have partied as much as some of my friends (some of which are still … Continue reading

Sex vs. Changing the World

One of my huge pet peeves is when someone is in a difficult situation and they whine and complain about it, but proceed to do nothing to change the situation.  Usually this comes in two flavors -  relationships and jobs – although it really can apply to anything.  It drives me nuts.  If you don’t like a situation in life get off your ass and do something about it. When it comes to starting your own business, everyone has a tendency to talk a big game.  You might succeed, you might fail, but to me it’s unacceptable to talk about … Continue reading
