Experimenting With Random Posts on My Homepage

One of the things that I’ve struggled with on my blog is that by nature the latest content is by far the most prominent. Sure I have my essays and the “most popular” on the sidebar, and there’s always categories, archives, and search, but those all tend to favor the same 10 most commented posts, or the most recent, or they require you to know what you’re looking for. There’s no easy way to expose people to some of the good posts with good discussion from years past. I decided to try something new and have the third post on … Continue reading

New Blog Design

About six months ago I decided it was time to start working on a new design. I had, what I thought, was a crazy cool idea. Of course, I never got around to it because, well, my blog design isn’t really that important in the grand scheme of things. This weekend I decided to sit down and take the little that I had done over that six months and put together a new theme. I didn’t much stick to the original idea because I realized it would probably never get done (or, my work wouldn’t get done). My main goal … Continue reading

The People that Ruin Blogging for Me

A few weeks back Nev wrote a post asking for feedback from his readers about his blog and himself in general.  In the comments someone mentioned that they wished he would post more about his e-commerce site, House of Rave. He responded: I sincerely wish I could post more about House Of Rave since I love writing about it. I’ve refrained quite a lot to reveal less to competitors and avoid copycats. There is a DIRECT correlation between how much I write about my business and how many people immediately try to emulate it. His next post was about how … Continue reading

New Blog Design

I’ve been intending to do a re-design and upgrade for a while, but finally just got around to it the past few weeks after Detailed Image launched.  If you’re reading in a feed reader, this might be the one post where you’ll get something from clicking through and actually reading it on the site.  In no particular order, here’s what’s been changed: A more modern design.  Special thanks to Phil Thompson, who developed the Dylan theme that I started with and then customized to my liking.  It saved me a ton of time. Excerpts on the homepage, full posts only … Continue reading

T Minus 1 Week to Launch

As you may have noticed, I’ve been posting less and less lately as we get close to launching the new Detailed Image.  Short of an unexpected disaster, we’re planning to roll out the new site next Friday, May 1, around 6 AM Eastern Time.  Until then, I’ll be on a hiatus from blogging as we scramble to wrap everything up and do sufficient QC testing.  I’m thoroughly impressed with how well everything came together.  We all worked extra hard to manage the additional day to day work associated with our fast growth, while still managing to bang out an infinitely … Continue reading

Vacation Time! Guess Who’s Filling In?

I’ve mentioned a few times that the last real vacation I took was a family trip to Florida back in January of 2005.  A few months back we decided that since sales would likely be lowest in January (although we’re doing pretty good so far), we’d all take a vacation that month.  Greg was away this past week.  This coming week is my turn.  I’m heading up to a Bed & Breakfast in northern Vermont with my girlfriend.  Mostly I’m just looking forward to relaxing and not thinking about work as much as possible.  Hopefully I’ll come back refreshed and … Continue reading

503rd Post Extravaganza

Earlier today I realized that I had passed the 500 post milestone, something I never would have dreamed about when I wrote my first post back in November 2005.  Turns out that #500 was my Productive Napping post.  A few months back when I realized that 500 was imminent, I thought to myself “I should do something special”.  Well, I clearly forgot. So tonight while watching the football games I decided to spend some time on the blog.  I am planning a huge overhaul designed around the “entrepreneurship as a career choice” talk I gave at Skidmore, but that’s more … Continue reading

A Change of Scenery!

If you’ve stumbled upon this blog, odds are you’re coming from the SportsLizard Entrepreneur Blog. This is the new-and-improved version of the blog formerly known to many as the SL YE Blog. I still plan on providing the same type of raw and candid content, and hopefully will be able to use this fresh copy of WordPress to stretch the limits of what I provide to the next level. If you want to go back and re-read any of the old SL YE Blog, which spans from 11/2005 until this morning, you can do so in the archive. There are … Continue reading
